Natural bees wax over collage and pencil drawing - oil paint applied on top of wax.
Some of the lighter values of the pencil line have gotten lost in the photo.

Encaustic Green Dress

This piece is compiled using a 5x7 high quality print of one of my paintings mounted on 6x8 board. I then collaged around the edges with my favorite paper, then poured bees wax over the entire piece, then shaved away portions of the wax to reveal the paper under the surface. It makes for a very rich, lustrous one of kind piece.

Encaustic Workshop Pieces

I spent this past weekend at an encaustic workshop in Camden ME - taught by my friend and incredible artist, Kathryn Oliver.

The first image obviously is the finished product. I started with a charcoal and pastel drawing which I put a fixative on which contributed to the extremely dark face. That is the reason I do not like or hardly ever use a fixative. The third image is after I fused some wax pigment to the surface. The top (final) is after a layer of bees wax and shaving it down and using some oil paint. Thanks to Kathryn Oliver's Encaustic Workshop this past weekend. http://www.kathrynoliver.com/photo_encaustic_workshops

White Buttons

The collage in this painting are illustrations from an old book I found antiquing last week. I found the reference photo in the same shop. I didn't know if I'd have the heart to tear up the book, but when it came down to it, I had no problem.

I started this as a demo in my past workshop and it took on many transformations since then. I used a charcoal drawing that I drew from an old photograph of an ancestor as my reference. I encountered new challenges - as you will with any painting, but some have more than others. I like to try to pick up colors from the paper to use in the face. Sometimes I feel like I am reinventing the wheel with each painting. Ceci and Maureen, this one's for you!
